#MWC15: Panasonic Nubo is watching

BARCELONA, Spain – One of my favorite discussions from the first day of Mobile World Congress was with Panasonic regarding its launch of Nubo – which it claimed is the first monitoring camera supporting 4G.

Nubo doesn’t require Wi-Fi or broadband. It’s small, lightweight, portable and has a magnet so it can be attached easily to the side of the fridge, for example. Although it supports 4G, it will also support 2G (with stills) and 3G when 4G isn’t available (with video clips). Nubo seems to be a handy device to take on vacation or business travel to watch over your valuables when you are away – a timely topic for those who have attended MWC.

Nubo comes with a SIM, is free to try for three months and offers various options based on your usage profile. The freemium service works on Wi-Fi and captures content on a local microSD card, providing an always-on video service. Initially launching in Europe with connectivity provided by Vodafone, it will be supported in all 30 of Vodafone’s machine-to-machine service locations.

Small, personal and private, all of the data is secured in Panasonic’s private cloud. Nubo is available for pre-order in April and scheduled to ship in November. The camera works with a power supply and battery back up, indoors/outdoors and is billed as an “alarm system.” The information it shares with you is basically an alarm when movement occurs, whether human or non-human – the wind, your pets, or maybe even aliens. You can set parameters for what constitutes an alarm. Pricing is based on the number of alarms received.
