NAIAS 2015: DENSO showcases smart city vision

DETROIT – Denso, a supplier of advanced automotive technology, systems and components, showcased its smart city vision at this week’s Detroit Auto Show. The smart city vision will bring together automotive safety and solar technologies in an effort to create a more environmentally conscious city.

Cars will be able to navigate by using V2X and DSRC technology throughout the city without the use of traffic lights. The cars will communicate not only with each other, but with the surrounding infrastructure and will have the ability to recognize pedestrians who may enter their line of travel.  Solar technology will power the smart city and cars will move about under electric power. This autonomous driving vision integrates V2X and human – machine interface technologies to accomplish these goals.

DSRC enables the car to assess the nearby environment and communicate with other cars and infrastructure through roadside hot spots to manage traffic flows in a smoother fashion.  Safety systems help drivers better sense the situation around them by minimizing distractions. These systems fall into three categories:

  • Active safety including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, driving status monitoring to identify inattentive driving behavior and intersection movement assistance to ensure safe flow through these areas
  • Pre-crash safety to identify potential risks along a route and provide collision warnings
  • Passive safety systems such as airbags and eCall.
