Carrier Wrap: Verizon Wireless to add 300 jobs; SouthernLINC signs power deal

Verizon Wireless recently held a job fair in the Rochester, N.Y., area, looking to fill up to 300 positions at a Henrietta-based call center.

According to the Rochester Business Journal, the positions include customer service and technical support and are on top of 300 new positions added at the location last year. Verizon Wireless reportedly has 1,400 employees in the area, ranking it No. 17 on the RBJ list of the region’s largest employers.

Verizon Wireless early last year was reported to be shutting five call centers and consolidating seven other facilities across the country, impacting around 5,200 employees. Verizon Wireless parent company Verizon Communications late last year was reported to be cutting approximately 1,000 positions through buyout offers.

• SouthernLINC Wireless signed a multiyear deal with Plug Power to provide the wireless operator with its ReliOn backup power fuel cell solutions. The backup power is expected to be deployed at more than 500 cell sites across SouthernLINC’s footprint in the Southeast.

Plug Power said its ReliOn product includes fuel cell systems and bulk refillable hydrogen storage, DC plant rectifiers and distribution, battery technology and space for radio equipment, in an environmentally hardened outdoor cabinet.

SouthernLINC, which is owned by energy provider Southern Company, is in the process of deploying LTE technology across its network to supplement its legacy iDEN operations.
