China Unicom 4G focus in 2015
China Unicom’s subscriber base continues to slow. In November, the carrier registered fewer than 1.1 million 3G and 4G users, the lowest number in more than three years.
The operator is planning to focus on 4G devices in 2015. Forbes reports that China Unicom is aiming to sell 100 million 4G devices in 2015. China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier, signed up more than 70 million 4G subscribers in the first eleven months of 2014.
Bharti Airtel’s plan to charge for VoIP calls under review
The Indian government is looking into Bharti Airtel’s plan to charge separately for Internet call services such as Skype, Viber and Line. The operator’s plan will not allow customers to use data packages to make voice over Internet Protocol calls, requiring customers to pay extra for the services. This is the first time that customers have been required to pay extra for VoIP calls in India.
Vodafone could bring in the new year with Sky acquisition
Reports are swirling that Vodafone could soon make a bid for satellite broadcaster, Sky. Analysts believe that Vodafone will buy Sky within the next year. Worth an estimated $15 billion, Sky would give Vodafone access to the growing pay-TV market.
