British Telecommunications in preliminary talks to buy EE

  • Deutsche Telekom and Orange may be considering selling consumer network EE to BT. EE is the largest mobile operator in the United Kingdom. Orange and Deutsche Telekom have previously considered whether they should list EE on the stock market.
  • On Monday, news broke that BT was also reported to be in talks with Telefonica UK over possibly buying rival company O2.

Bharti Airtel selling thousands of towers

  • Bharti Airtel has made a deal to sell its 4,800-plus telecom towers in Nigeria to American Tower Corporation for more than $1-billion. Bharti Airtel, India’s top telecommunications company, will sell 4,800 towers to American Tower and then lease them back.

Vodafone apologizes for sending 1,700 phone numbers to police by mistake

  • The phone numbers of 1,700 journalists were mistakenly given to Scotland Yard officers working on Operation Elveden, which is investigating allegations of illegal payments to public officials by journalists. The police had asked for details on one specific journalist at News UK.

European Parliament may unbundle Google

  • European Parliament has suggested unbundling Google’s search engine from its other services. A draft motion has been supported by Europe’s two major political parties. A vote on the issue is expected in the coming days.
