Ericsson buys Apcera for PaaS

Let the disruption begin — this is how Silicon Valley’s Apcera is announcing its new platform-as-a-service (PaaS). Continuum is a policy-driven platform that has attracted attention and investment from Ericsson. The telecom equipment giant said today that it sees PaaS as a key to success in the cloud, and that it has purchased a majority stake in Apcera. (The purchase price was not disclosed.)

For Ericsson, the investment is about extending policy-based automation from telecom networks to the cloud. The company says it will target both operator and enterprise clouds with the Continuum solution.

Apcera’s Continuum works across cloud, on premise and hybrid environments. Ericsson said today that in addition to buying a majority stake in Apcera, it will commit funding toward the development of next-generation technology as well as sales channel and ecosystem creation.

Platform-as-a-service is a more robust version of software-as-a-service (SaaS). PaaS enables businesses to outsource operating systems, applications, hardware, and storage. Apcera’s PaaS solution will complement Ericsson’s existing cloud service offerings. Ericsson’s cloud services manager distributes cloud resources throughout the network and orchestrates physical and virtual infrastructure.

The Apcera investment complements Ericsson’s partnership with Guardtime, announced earlier this month. Guardtime is a security specialist that will integrate its keyless signature infrastructure solution into Ericsson’s cloud portfolio.
