Intel, Chunghwa strike IoT, SDN MoU

IoT, SDN, NFV central to deal

The move toward network virtualization continues to break out across the globe, with Taiwanese telecom provider Chunghwa Telecom announcing a partnership with Intel to further its “Internet of Things” and software-defined networking plans.
According to published reports, Chunghwa and Intel Taiwan have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop technologies in support of the burgeoning IoT and SDN space with Intel providing a security enhanced gateway solution leveraging Chunghwa’s network resources.
This is not the first tie up between the two companies, as Intel and Chunghwa announced in 2010 an MoU to begin work on “cloud computing technologies and services.”
Intel has aggressively moved into the telecom software space, having last year launched a new reference design to support SDN.
“SDN and NFV are critical elements of Intel’s vision to transform the expensive, complex networks of today to a virtualized, programmable, standards-based architecture running commercial off-the-shelf hardware,” said Rose Schooler, GM of Intel’s communications and storage infrastructure group, at the time.
More recently, Intel has found takers to its Network Builders program, which looks to accelerate the deployment of software-defined networking and NFV solutions. Members of the program have access to a reference architecture library of solutions set for “implementation in production environments.”
A recent report from Infonetics Research found that the Asia-Pacific region was set to lead worldwide growth in the sales of telecom and “datacom” equipment and software, with the research firm forecasting 6% year-over-year growth in that region, compared with an expected 4.5% year-over-year growth for North America. Overall, the market for related equipment is forecast to hit a cumulative $1 trillion between 2014 and 2018.
