Verizon Wireless again tops in RootMetrics network rankings

Verizon Wireless judged No. 1 in network performance

Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility continued to show a clear network advantage over smaller rivals Sprint and T-Mobile US in RootMetrics’ latest nationwide performance report, though the gap in some instances is closing.
In its mid-year 2014 report, RootMetrics proclaimed Verizon Wireless the overall winner with a score of 81.6 out of 100. AT&T Mobility was a close second with a score of 79.5, followed by T-Mobile US at a distant No. 3 with a score of 71.5 and Sprint in last with a score of 69.6. In the latest ranking, Verizon Wireless scored top marks in four of the five separate categories (reliability index, speed index, data performance and call performance) with AT&T Mobility scoring highest in text performance.

Verizon Wireless scored a similar victory in the last RootMetrics nationwide ranking from the second half of 2013, with the carrier scoring 89.7 points, compared with AT&T Mobility’s 86.2 points, Sprint’s score of 68.2 and T-Mobile US’ score of 64.3.
For its latest report, RootMetrics also broke out results from more densly populated metro markets, which showed stronger performances from the smaller rivals. Verizon Wireless again led its rivals in overall scores, however RootMetrics found that T-Mobile US managed to outperform AT&T Mobility in its speed index, though AT&T Mobility managed to outscore its smaller rival in all other metrics.

“As in our last nationwide study, bragging rights once again belong to Verizon in our National RootScore Report,” RootMetrics noted. “Sweeping overall performance, network reliability, and network speed, Verizon was the top carrier in the categories that point toward the entirety of your mobile experience. Verizon also finished first in our call and data categories. Indeed, the only category that it did not win was text, in which it finished second to AT&T.”
