Telecom Analytics: Communications leads big data; Orange Switzerland taps Ericsson for BSS

Media and communications, banking and services are the industries leading big data investments in 2013: 35% of media and communications organizations said that they have already invested in big data, followed by 34% of banking organizations and 32% of services firms, according to a new report from Gartner.

Big data investments continue to rise in 2013, Gartner noted, with the gap between companies that said they have investment plans in big data technologies and those that actually have deployed representing an opportunity for growth. Gartner’s survey found that of the 64% of organizations investing or planning to invest in big data technology in 2013, 30% have already invested in big data technology, 19% plan to invest within the next year, and an additional 15% plan to invest within two years. Less than 8% of survey respondents have actually deployed.

IT spend set to increase — The global telecom industry’s revenues will remain roughly flat over the next few years, with a decline in spending on voice services counterbalanced by growth in spending on mobile and fixed (broadband) data services, according to global analyst firm Ovum. The consultant firm forecasts IT spending will reach $60 billion in 2017, driven by investments in packaged software and system integration

BSS — Orange Switzerland tapped Ericsson to supply core components of its new hardware and software architecture supporting Orange Switzerland’s business processes, or business support systems. The scope of the BSS project will comprise the billing of prepaid subscribers and so-called multi-mediation and multi-activation features. Ericsson added that this multi-mediation supports the retrieval and processing of user data from all network nodes allowing that data to be made available to the relevant IT back-end systems and billed in real time.

Network Analytics — A new report: “Network Analytics Market,” found that North America is expected to have the largest network analytics market share in 2013, with Asia-Pacific market expected to witness enormous growth in the market by 2018, hitting No. 2 in terms of opportunities for network analytics vendors. The report highlighted a number of major players in the network analytics market space, including Sandvine, Empirix, Cisco, IBM, Accenture, Hewlett-Packard, JDSU, Danaher and Procera Networks.
