Colombian police invest millions to update communications system

The Colombian National Police is investing millions of dollars to modernize its radio communications system. The five-month update program has begun in the state of Cundinamarca, where an expected $4 million of investments is to be spent. Further investments are expected in the country’s capital of Bogotá ($10 million) and Medellin ($4 million), according to police colonel Jairo Gordillo.

The update will include the move to Motorola’s Astro 25 digital radio system, which meets the Project 25 international standard. The police were previously using an analog version of Motorola’s solution that has been in place since 1995.

“We increased the quality of communications, which is a feature of these digital systems,” explained Gordillo. “Besides, we improved security, which is extremely necessary, because we need confidentiality.”
