DTAC taps new Thai chief

DTAC, the country’s second-largest mobile phone operator, has announced the appointment of Jon Eddy Abdullah as chief executive for its Thailand operation, succeeding Torre Johnsen, who will oversee the Bangladesh operation, effective March 1.

The appointment is part of the reshuffling of top executives in three countries of the Norwegian group Telenor, the majority shareholder of DTAC.

Mr Johnsen, a 65-year-old executive with a financial background, will become CEO of Telenor’s Grameenphone in Bangladesh, while the Thai operation will be taken over by Mr Abdullah, the US-born executive currently in charge in Pakistan.

Telenor, however, has not named the new head of the Pakistani unit.

Mr Abdullah, 44, has been active in the Asian market with more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunication industry in the region. Prior to his current post in Pakistan, where Telenor has a client base of 25 million, he worked with a subsidiary of Telenor in Malaysia, according to Telenor’s statement yesterday.
