EMS Wireless creates broadband group

ATLANTA-EMS Technologies Inc. said it formed the Terrestrial Broadband Group within its EMS Wireless division, which will provide base-station antennas and hub assemblies for the fixed-wireless market.

The equipment will support all major frequency bands for local multipoint distribution service networks, including the 10 GHz, 24 GHz, 28 GHz and 38 GHz bands, as well as the 2.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz multichannel multipoint distribution service bands, the company said.

EMS said it anticipates strong demand for these fixed-wireless products, particularly in Asia, Europe and South America. Its Brazilian manufacturing and marketing facility, set to begin operations in January, will assist in marketing the terrestrial broadband products.

“The LMDS/MMDS market is still at the early stage, which makes it an exciting time to get in at the ground level,” said W. Douglas McDowell, the newly appointed vice president of the Terrestrial Broadband Group. “The success of businesses in the future will be directly related to how fast they have access to data. Access to broadband data is the only way they can stay ahead of the curve and not be left behind.”

Al Hansen, president and chief operating officer of EMS Technologies, also noted only 2 percent of business buildings in the United States currently are reached by fiber.

McDowell is one of eight founding employees of EMS, and most recently led the company’s operations for EMS Wireless.

EMS Technologies is headquartered in Atlanta.
