Compaq broadens wireless interests

NEW ORLEANS-Compaq Computer Corp. added to its wireless interests this week, unveiling its Mobile Internet Platform for e-commerce solutions, as well as a long term partnership with Research In Motion Inc.

The Mobile Internet Platform is an extension of Compaq’s NonStop eBusiness solutions program. The platform, based on Wireless Application Protocol technology, is a business-grade solution for service providers that Compaq said enables wireless users to trade stocks, exchange e-mail and conduct business-to-business and e-commerce transactions via the Internet.

Aiming to provide a complete, end-to-end solution, Compaq said it will provide systems and business application integration, support and portal/content relationships to support the platform.

The company also unveiled its Wireless Connectivity Suite, a WAP-based handset able to access the Internet and e-mail designed to use the platform’s services. The suite includes the Aero 1500 and 2100 palm-sized computers, a connecting cable, WAP browser, Web browser and fax software.

In addition, Compaq signed a distribution deal with Research In Motion Ltd., under which Compaq will leverage its role as a leading integrator of Microsoft Exchange to deliver RIM’s BlackBerry wireless e-mail solution to its customers.
